The last time we heard about Edgar Wright'sAnt-Manmovie, based on the Marvel superhero, was actually just back in April, whenKevin Feige said thatwe may actually see them startingearlywork on it by the end of this year with a release coming sometime afterThe Avengershits in 2012. But that news didn't stopBox Office Magazine(found viaComingSoon) from askingEdgar Wrightabout the comic book movie in their recent interview. Wright gives a good update and even reveals some details about what to expect, including making anIron Mancomparison for its humor. Sadly, it doesn't seem like much progress has been made.
"I haven't actually started the second draft yet–I'm not going to be able to until this film {Scott Pilgrim} is out–but what we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it'sfunny, but it's a genre film. It's about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it's within another genre. Hissuitand itspoweris the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we've all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I'm not really a multi-tasker–I haven't done anything since Marvel liked our first draft."
We've been reporting on a potentialAnt-Manmovie directed by Edgar Wright sinceback in 2007and have been hunting for news about it ever since. It wasn't until February of this year that some interest heated up whenStan Lee tweetedabout a meeting he had with Edgar to talk aboutAnt-Man. Thankfully it sounds like Wright is still on-board and still prepared to direct this at some point down the line, even if that's not until 2012. Beyond that and his update above, we're just going to have to wait and hope for more updates on this down the line. Though with Marvel ramping up their offerings, I expect to see thissoonerrather than later.
